The Mijas Town Hall has unlocked the project to cover the María Barranco stream in Las Lagunas, with the approval of the feasibility study by the Junta de Andalucía. This mandatory procedure, which must be authorised by the Public Water Authority (DPH), allows the project to move forward. It responds to a historic demand from residents and is considered key from both an environmental and mobility perspective.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), announced on Thursday 16th that the government team has budgeted for and completed the feasibility study for the works, a preliminary and essential step for tendering the drafting of the construction project and its subsequent execution. To this end, the Town Hall will allocate the million euros granted to the municipality by the Malaga Provincial Council as part of the fourth phase of the Municipal Economic Assistance Plan (PAEM).

Mata praised the project, which is “key to improving mobility in an area where many Mijas residents live”, and highlighted that it will create more green spaces and improved pedestrian accessibility. In addition, the persistent bad odours from the stream, especially during summer, will be eliminated, along with the pests that appear in the urban watercourse. The mayoress was accompanied by Soledad Romero, president of the Residencial Centro homeowners’ association, which borders the stream.
Wider cycle lane and access to buildings
The covering of the María Barranco stream will help to prevent flooding in the built-up urban area, as well as provide aesthetic improvements and better quality of life for residents in the area. Mata presented several renderings showing how the thoroughfare will look once the works are completed, with a wider cycle lane and improved access to the buildings that currently ‘overhang’ the urban watercourse.

The Infrastructure and Works Service, led by the councillor Juan José Torres Trella (PP), commissioned this feasibility study (awarded for 8,990 euros) and expects that the drafting of the works project will be awarded shortly, possibly before the end of 2025. Following that, the fieldwork will be put out to tender.
The area included in this project is classified as ‘social housing’, although it currently contains several industrial warehouses. In the future, the area could be redeveloped and transformed, as there is currently no access to these buildings due to the ‘scar’ caused by the riverbed.
The president of the Residencial Centro association thanked the Mijas Town Hall, “on behalf of all my neighbours and the residents of the area”, describing the project as a “great step” towards resolving a situation that has persisted for far too long.

The mayoress highlighted thecommitment of the Malaga Provincial Council to municipal investment plans, such as the PAEM, “which are essential in helping town halls carry out necessary and long-awaited projects such as this one”.
Pending the tendering of the project design, the approved feasibility study estimates a budget of approximately one million euros before tax for the works, although this figure will be finalised once the project is officially awarded.
