The Mijas Town Hall has declared the summer season over for its beaches. A period that, in the words of the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), "has been quiet", he added, highlighting the nearly 3,000 medical interventions carried out by the lifeguard and first aid service.
Of these, more than half were due to jellyfish stings and 983 were for injuries and burns. Other notable interventions included incidents involving sea urchin spines (74), heat-related conditions (23) and fainting (17).
The total number of interventions in prevention and water rescues reached 4,420, the majority (3,269) being preventive measures for users, representing 73.96% of the total. There were 163 minor water rescues, seven moderate rescues, and one serious rescue.
Adapted bathing
The Executive also reminds that Mijas has four adapted bathing areas for users with mobility difficulties. These areas are equipped and provide assistance to all users who want to enjoy the sea. Over the season, there were 2,473 users and a total of 933 assisted baths.

Five blue flags
Regarding the Operational Services and Basic Services departments, a detailed strategy was implemented to ensure the entire Mijas coastline was maintained in excellent condition. Daily cleaning was carried out along the beaches, coastal paths, car parks, and access points, in addition to servicing the 17 toilet modules spread along the coastline
Notable improvements include the installation of two new toilet facilities at La Cala and Royal Beach, a new lifeguard and first-aid facility at La Luna, renovation of access walkways to the four adapted areas, and the placement of 120 new selective waste bins.

"During this time, 154 incidents were addressed, including repairs to showers, washbasins, beach access handrails, signage and access stairs to the watchtowers. The pace of work has been very high", explained the councillor.
It should be remembered that Mijas has five Blue Flags, highlighting the excellence of its beaches. Specifically, Calahonda-Riviera, Calahonda-Royal Beach-La Luna, El Chaparral, El Bombo and La Cala fly these prestigious emblems this year.
These distinctions are awarded annually by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac). To qualify, a thorough assessment is carried out across parameters as water quality, environmental management, safety, information and accessibility. According to the Executive, all these requirements “have been met with flying colours” along the Mijas coastline.
