Last year’s event was a huge success in terms of both participation and atmosphere, and this year promises two more days of fun, featuring traditional songs and modern adaptations performed in each group’s unique style. The Malaga Medical School Tuna (TMM) and the Culture Department are bringing the II International TMM Villa de Mijas Contest to Mijas.
The first day will be Friday 26th of September. “We have the parade and serenade, which will end at the Casa Museo in Mijas Pueblo, and afterwards the music will continue at the Plaza Virgen de la Peña, where there will also be a bar”, explained the deputy head of the Medical Tuna, Rafael Guerrero, on Wednesday 17th at the presentation of this year’s event at the Manuel España Theatre. For his part, the councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), added that “I think everyone will enjoy it, not only because the tunas are so striking, but also because of the cultural element. The event brings life to Mijas Pueblo, benefiting shops, restaurants tourists and local residents alike”, added Maldonado.

More than 180 tunos
On the second day, the performances and the music competition will take place, starting at 17:30 hours. In total, there will be nine groups, or around 180 tunos. Three of the groups come from the Netherlands, one from Maastricht and two from Eindhoven, including one female tuna. Spanish groups come from various locations including Albacete, among others, and the province will be represented by the two medical school tunas, the female and the male.
“The prizes cover the parade, best serenade, first, second and third stage, as well as other distinctions such as best tambourine, best cape dance, best flag, best soloist, etc.; there are endless awards to be given”, added the representative of the medical tuna.
In Malaga, there are currently seven tunas, five male and two female. “Our motto is that we are timeless and alive, because we always adapt our songs to the times, both old and new. Even though we wear 16th-century costumes, we evolve with the music”, he said.
“We are going to enjoy a weekend focused on an art form and cultural expression that is very much our own, tunas, with international participation adding prestige”, said the councillor for Culture, who concluded by saying, “I am grateful to the Malaga Tuna for its commitment to Mijas and for helping to consolidate this competition”.
