With the aim of preserving the mountains and preventing possible forest fires, the municipal government team put the maintenance service for the Sierra de Mijas out to tender in May for a total of 1.2 million euros. The contract is expected to be awarded shortly. “This is the first time a contract has been put out to tender for the conservation, maintenance and preservation of public land, which is visited by many people and is a responsibility we all share”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).
The work covered by the contract includes forestry treatments, clearing through slashing, thinning and pruning (including the removal of invasive species to improve forest health and prevent fires, with appropriate management of the resulting waste), reforestation in the natural environment and the conservation, maintenance and improvement of forest infrastructure (paths, signage, water troughs, etc.). “Seven companies have submitted bids for this tender, and we hope to have results soon so that we can carry out this much-needed work in October”, said the mayoress, adding that this is particularly important “now that we are seeing much of Spain affected by these fires, some of which are deliberate and others not”.
The mayoress also noted that the service will run for eight months: from October 1st to May 31st. “The Mijas Town Hall has never before put out to tender a contract of this nature, which will cover very specific services during this period”, explained Mata.

As the government team pointed out last May, during the execution of the work, it will not be permitted to cut, uproot, prune or damage any flora species included in the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species, the Andalusian catalogue, or Annex V of Law 42/2007 on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Animal and Plant Species of Community Interest which require strict protection. If any species listed in these documents are encountered, prior authorisation must be requested from the Regional Government of Andalusia before any action is taken.
The document also adds that any plant waste generated must be removed or disposed of promptly, either by shredding, chipping or transfer to an authorised site.
