Between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, residents in the area raised the alarm after spotting flames at the Reciclados Mijas recycling plant (Arroyo de La Cala de Mijas, 68). A team from the Mijas Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, where they joined the recycling plant's own staff to begin extinguishing the fire, which appears to have been caused by burning pruning debris.

The councillor for the Fire Department, Francisco Jerez (Vox), assured that "there is no risk of the fire spreading, as the area has been properly contained. However, it will take some time to fully extinguish the blaze, as there is a large amount of accumulated fuel, both dry and fresh material, which means that smoke will continue to be released for several more hours. Until it is completely out, a team of firefighters will remain on site, working alongside staff from the recycling company to put out the fire. Reciclados Mijas is using its own resources, including a couple of backhoe loaders and a water tanker equipped with its own storage tanks". The councillor insists that there is no danger of the fire spreading as "it is very well contained".

Arancha Márquez, a technician at Reciclados Mijas, confirmed that the fire was ‘"accidental" because "we have a large volume of plant waste piled up here and due to yesterday's heatwave, which was a very hot day, part of it caught fire. It was an accident. This type of material ferments and can reach very high temperatures, and the intense heat we’ve had recently contributed to spontaneous combustion". The technician stressed that, "thanks to the security team and all the staff, we were able to bring it under control. There were visible flames and it was a bit dramatic at first, but it was quickly contained and didn’t spread beyond the site, it remained within the plant’s premises".

According to Márquez, the Mijas Fire Dipartment praised the efforts of the entire Reciclados Mijas team, including machine operators, technicians, security staff, mechanics, and administrative personnel: “By working together, we managed to contain the fire quickly using specialist equipment such as water tanks, backhoes, shovels, hoses and water points. Fortunately, there has been no material damage or injuries".
