The aim of the event is to raise awareness and protect submerged forests. It will take place on the afternoon of July 19th on the Torreón Beach in Mijas

On the 19th of July, a new awareness event will take place to promote the dissemination, protection, and conservation of submerged forests. ‘Mares Vivos’ (Living Seas) is the name of the campaign run by the Mijas Town Hall in collaboration with the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, and it will be held on Torreón Beach in La Cala.

According to the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), “we will be joined by residents who have dedicated their entire lives to the sea. It is also important to highlight the activity of cleaning the sea surface by kayak. As the Spanish saying goes, being clean doesn’t come from cleaning more, but from getting dirty less, and we have to understand that the sea is something we all must care for and, thanks to campaigns like this, we are getting closer every day to having the coastline and the sea we all want”.

For this reason, ‘Mares Vivos’ returns with a new awareness day dedicated to the protection of submerged forests. Here in Mijas, the Posidonia meadow off El Chaparral beach is one of the main examples. Following an in-situ study carried out by professional divers from the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, an open day for the general public has now been organised.

The aim is to raise awareness of the marine biodiversity in order to encourage its protection. The day will feature various activities such as a submerged forest laboratory, marine workshops,  storytelling sessions, and fun activities for children. According to the president of the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, Juan Antonio López, “the workshops will be very dynamic and engaging. We will have a laboratory where participants can learn about the unique features of endangered species. There will also be a first-aid simulation so that everyone knows how to respond if iconic species such as turtles or dolphins are found stranded. We will also carry out a surface clean-up by kayak with the Creamar Mijas environmental volunteer group, and the day will conclude with cultural activities”.
