‘Mijas con Alma y Solidar Edad’ is a programme that provides companionship to elderly people and is looking for volunteers

The Mijas Town Hall and the Harena Foundation are seeking volunteers for the programme ‘Mijas con Alma y Solidar Edad’ (Mijas con alma and solidarity) for the elderly, which aims to improve the quality of life of vulnerable people by reducing their isolation and emotional deprivation.

"Mijas is home to more than 14,500 people over the age of 65, with over 3,500 of them living alone. Unfortunately, the administration cannot be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That is why, thanks to the foundation and groups that help with their volunteering, this work can be carried out", said the councillor for Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP).

They will now assess the individuals most in need of this support and seek volunteers from local social groups. "We are already working with neighbourhood, youth and sports groups, where we aim to recruit as many volunteers as possible to complement the work that the administration can offer", said Marín.

This is a two-hour-a-week volunteer programme requiring a one-year commitment. It is open to anyone and volunteers can choose the day and time that suits them best to spend with an elderly, someone who will surely be waiting to welcome them with open arms.

To conclude, the manager of the Harena Foundation, Angie Moreno, added that the aim of the programme is "to break the isolation of elderly people who do not have the resources to hire carers and who suffer from loneliness, most of whom are over 80 years old".
