The Town Hall makes the coastline ready before Holy Week

Sand supply, algae removal, installation of lifeguard and toilet kiosks are some of the actions

The Town Hall is focusing its efforts on the maintenance and conservation of the coastline after the storms, which have affected several beaches, including El Charcón, where, as the councillor for this area, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), pointed out, “we are going to add 3,000 cubic metres of sand to ensure it is in perfect condition”. Sand is also being added to beaches such as El Bombo, La Luna and El Ejido. The work is being carried out by the Departments of Operational Services, Beaches, Basic Income and the General Directorate for the Coast and the Sea. “In El Bombo, three specialised machines are working, which belong to the ministrg”, explained Gómez Teruel on Thursday 27th, who clarified that “this winter a significant amount of sand was brought in, as a lot was lost on this beach last year”.

In addition to this action, algae is also being removed from the coast, which this year has arrived earlier in Mijas. “We are cleaning the coastline of algae on a daily basis, it is an invasive plant that reproduces easily and is constantly reaching the coasts”, explained the councillor. The Beaches Department is also repairing other damage caused by the recent rains. All so that the coastline is in perfect condition for Holy Week. “We are working every day of the year, so that when we have to do the most important work between February and June, neighbours and tourists will find a coastline that is a benchmark both during Holy Week and the high season”, said the head of the Beaches Department.

Investment

On the other hand, Gómez Teruel highlighted that the Mijas Town Hall has made an investment of around 122,000 euros in the purchase of new toilet and lifeguard kiosks, which, as he pointed out, "will give a more modern image to our coastline". In addition, permeable concrete flooring and equipment for selective waste collection have been purchased.

The rescue and lifeguard kiosks have a medical room, a lifeguard room, a unisex toilet for both rooms and a watchtower. Both the lifeguard kiosks and the portable toilets are made of laminated wood and solid Nordic pine, while the flooring is made of anti-slip marine plywood.

The concrete walkways are anti-slip imitation wood with 1,800 by 1,000 mm. and 120 mm. high, made with top quality sand and gravel high-strength concrete.

The bins for selective waste collection have a capacity of 120 litres, are made of pure high-density polythene and are equipped with a tilting lid, rubber wheels and handles for transport and front grip.

During Holy Week, the rescue and lifeguard service will be in operation, watching the beaches from 12 to 19th hours from the 12th to the 20th of April.
