On Tuesday 25th of March, the Crime Prevention and Dissemination of Mediation in Education programme was presented at secondary school IES Villa de Mijas (Mijas Pueblo), with the presence of the delegate for Justice in Malaga, Teresa Pardo, and the delegate for Education, Miguel Briones.
This new prevention programme is being developed by the Diagrama Foundation in Andalusia and is aimed at young ESO students from schools in the eight provinces. It will run for five years.
According to Pardo, "it is absolutely essential that minors are aware of the consequences and scope of each of their actions, and know where the limit between a tolerated attitude and a crime may be. This is a work on knowledge and crime prevention. Young people must know that their misbehaviour can be criminalised and, therefore, they can be involved in juvenile court proceedings, as foreseen by the law, and be sentenced. This can include deprivation of liberty in a youth custody centre, an open regime centre or community service".
These talks inform minors about what behaviours may constitute a criminal offence and therefore be tried and convicted.
According to the head of the Diagrama Foundation, Daniel Elizarán, which is providing the training, "what we want the children to understand is that there are acts that have a series of consequences and these consequences, given their age, can have repercussions. That is what we are going to explain to them and how they can solve and deal with these situations".
Justice and Education
The programme has the collaboration of the Education Delegation, as it is carried out in educational centres "as the best option for reaching young people", said the delegate, who insisted on the importance of restorative justice. "This is where mediation comes into play as an alternative way of finding a solution to a conflict but also repairing the damage caused, as long as there is regret", explained Pardo.
For his part, Briones said that "this programme shows the connection, coordination and connectivity that exists between the departments that seek, above all, to prevent those behaviours that are contrary to coexistence in schools and that can end up becoming a crime".
The councillor of the government team of the Mijas Town Hall, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), wanted to attend the presentation to support the initiative. "It is a very good programme for young people to realise the impact that their actions have on their lives and on the lives of others", concluded the councillor.
