Symbol of faith and rebirth: Mijas already has its poster for Holy Week 2025

  • Rosa María Loza Millán, member of the Management Commission of the Virgen de la Peña, was in charge of the presentation
  • Brotherhoods and the Town Hall have been working since October 2024 to polish every detail of the Passion Week

Designed by Mijas Comunicación, the poster pays homage to Easter Sunday with the image of the resurrected Jesus, symbol of hope

The Inmaculada Concepción parish church hosted on Saturday 15th an event charged with emotion and spirituality: the presentation of the poster for Holy Week 2025. In a church full of neighbours, brotherhoods and authorities, Mijas experienced one of the most awaited events of the year, which was organised in collaboration with the brotherhoods from Mijas, marking the beginning of the preparations for a Holy Week that combines tradition, spirituality and community. The event was notable for its spiritual depth and connection to local identity, and was held under the Jubilee of Hope promulgated by Pope Francis. As the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), said, this is "a poster that perfectly captures what hope is, the hope that all of us who like Holy Week have. For this reason I would like to thank all the people who make it possible, as it is so special and so unique".

The poster, designed by Isabel Merino from Mijas Comunicación, was presented by Rosa María Loza Millán, a key figure in the field of religious brotherhoods and education. Technical engineer in Computer Management and teacher, Rosa María has cultivated a life of faith, being president of the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora Coronada in Fuengirola and a member of the management committee of the Virgen de la Peña, patron saint of Mijas. With emotional words, she recalled her childhood in Mijas and how those roots have been present in her life. "This moment has been very moving. I am proud to do my bit for the faith and culture of Mijas", she said, “because it has brought back memories of my childhood, of my life, of my family, of my grandparents, because my grandparents, all four of them, are from Mijas”.

The poster captures the essence of Easter Sunday, with the Risen Christ and a red carnation in his hand, a symbol of renewed life and hope. As Loza said in her speech, "each step of our Lord invites us to dream of rebirth. This poster is a tribute to the light that overcomes darkness", linking her message to that of the Jubilee of Hope promulgated by Pope Francis.

The presentation was the announcement of a Passion Week that is just around the corner, the first also for Hermán Marcel, the new parish priest in Mijas Pueblo. "I am going to get to know all the religious expression of this town, which I think is very noble and has a very deep tradition and roots, something beautiful because it keeps the faith alive and transmits it from generation to generation", said the priest.

Previous steps

This year's Holy Week will begin with Palm Sunday on the 13th of April and our city is already putting the finishing touches to the liturgical programme. In this respect, Mata highlighted the joint effort of the brotherhoods, music bands and all the neighbours. "Mijas experiences Holy Week in a very special way, thanks to the tireless work of so many people who unite tradition and faith. This reminds us that, as a community, we achieve extraordinary things", said the mayoress.

  • La Banda de Música de Mijas ofreció un gran concierto

In addition, the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP), recalled that it is "a very organised work by all the brotherhoods, with the collaboration from many neighbours and many departments of the Town Hall so that we have a magical Holy Week".

Music and devotion to round off the event

The meeting was rounded off by the Mijas Music Band whose members gave a beautiful Lenten concert in an event that filled all the pews of the church. The notes resounded under the vaults and the director of the band, Francisco Valcárcel, said "it is an honour to participate in an event that breathes so much tradition".

Solidarity and tradition, hand in hand

The event was not only a display of faith, but also of social commitment: the association PIACHE, an NGO with links to Venezuela, where the parish priest Marcel is from, and which works to provide assistance to people with disabilities, set up a charity table to raise funds. The president of Piache España, María Pacheco, said that "we got to know this association through Father Marcel, who arrived in Pizarra in 2019, and since then we have been helping its humanitarian work".

The mayoress Ana Mata closed the event by thanking all the brotherhoods and volunteers for their dedication, and stressed that Mijas would not be the same without this union between tradition and community which makes its Holy Week a true legacy of faith and hope.
