The Mijas Town Hall, through the Department of Operational Services, is carrying out a periodic and gradual plan to clean up stream beds with the aim of improving the watercourses located in urban areas. "The aim of this plan is to keep these channels clear in order to avoid possible flooding, although this work also acts as a barrier to prevent forest fires", explained the councillor for Operational Services, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), during a visit to the Real stream on Wednesday 26th.
This season, the work began on September and is being carried out gradually in ten streams, during the months when there is no fire risk, in the following streams: María Barranco (1,500 m), Pueblo Rocío (300 m), Los Jarros (450 m), El Maestro (350 m), Hinojal (800 m), La Cala (1,800 m) and Ana María de Calypso (400 m) and Las Pasadas river (950 m), in the latter, 350 metres in the area of La Atalaya Macorra and 600 metres in La Vega. Work is currently being carried out on the Real stream and will be followed by work on the Pajares stream. "We started in the coastal area. The mouths of all the streams leading to the coast were cleaned first, which is why this year, in which we have had two major torrential rains, we have suffered less damage to the beach than in previous years", said Gómez Teruel.

Protection
Two heavy-duty vehicles are used to remove the brush and waste, along with five Renta Básica workers who are in charge of removing any remaining debris after the machinery has passed through. In fact, the organic material removed is shredded and deposited back in the areas to preserve the ecosystems.
"It is very important to keep these areas in good condition so that, in the event of rain, we can avoid creating blockages and also prevent waste from reaching the beaches. Of course, we seek to provide these areas with greater protection in the event of fire", said Gómez, who concluded by calling on neighbours not to throw waste into these streams because, “as well as posing a risk to safety, it can cause irreversible environmental damage”.
