The area of Tax Management has taken stock of its Statistics department, which carries out numerous tasks, including the control and maintenance of the Municipal Register of inhabitants, which as of Wednesday 12th, has 96,684 registered inhabitants.

According to the councillor responsible for Statistics, Mario Bravo (PP), the Mijas Town Hall wants to take stock of some departments in order to implement improvements if necessary. The Statistics department was one of the first to undergo this scrutiny, and has reported important figures. Regarding the register of inhabitants, 31,172 operations were carried out in 2024. "The employees have been responsible for more than 30,000 annotations in the register this year, of which 2,500 have been net registrations, that is, registrations minus cancellations, and all the rest (13,988) have been modifications", Bravo pointed out. Among the registrations, 726 were registrations due to birth, while among the cancellations, 440 were due to death.

Registration

"Mijas is divided into 39 electoral sections, which are then organised for voting and as of today there are 96,684 registered inhabitants, thirty-some percent of whom were not born in Spain, but already live here with us", specified the councillor, who wanted to stress the importance of being registered where one usually lives in order to provide each area with the necessary services, even more so in a tourist municipality, where “there are between 20,000 and 30,000 more people on the street who are non-resident visitors”. "Statistics informs all the other departments about the number of people, how old we are, where we live and what services we may need, in order, for example to set up a school where there is a large young population and a retirement home where there is a large elderly population. It is important to know where the majority of citizens live in order to locate services there, organise public transport, build car parks...", Bravo reflected.

In addition, the number of registered residents determines the funding that the Town Hall receives from the State: "Each Town Hall receives approximately 175 euros a year for each person registered in the municipality. Therefore, it is a source of income, it is also compulsory to be registered and anyone who is not registered at their permanent address can be sanctioned", added the councillor, who insisted on the importance of “all citizens checking that they are registered at their permanent address with the correct street name and number, and if they can also provide their mobile phone number and email address, all the better for everyone”.

The Statistics Department also carries out other tasks such as complying with the Regulation on Population and Demarcation of Local Public Entities, generating monthly files for the National Statistics Institute and publishing on the notice board, among many others.
