Public utility
The objective is to provide support from the local administration to associations that carry out projects for the benefit of all citizens of Mijas and to promote the development of associations for the defence of general and sectorial interests of the residents. These are groups declared to be of Municipal Public Utility. For the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), "the groups are essential for the idiosyncrasy and community life of Mijas. From the government team we care and worry about their needs, because by doing so, we will be contributing to the welfare of the neighbours".
The councillor for Citizen Participation, Silvia Marín (PP), pointed out that these grants are important for the functioning of Mijas associations and that they will always have the support of Mijas Town Hall. "These amounts have been allocated so that they can carry out their projects. The associations are a bridge to the citizens and the Town Hall must continue to help them", concluded the councillor.

Use of the subsidies
Among the beneficiaries are neighbourhood associations, animal welfare associations, brotherhoods and clubs. The amounts they have received range from almost 900 euros to 5,000 euros. The beneficiaries, for their part, have to meet several requirements to receive these grants, one of them is to justify the destination of this municipal subsidy, so on Thursday 6th they reported on the projects and acquisitions they made made during 2024 with the respective amounts paid by the Town Hall. The parish groups and brotherhoods are very clear about where to invest the aid. “It was spent on flowers, in the procession of the Virgen de la Paz, also in the procession of Holy Week and acts for the May Crosses and for Corpus Christi, for which an altar was made, also with flowers and decorations”, explained Juan Bosco Rivas, a member of the Brotherhood of Jesús Vivo.
Many of the collectives have used the grant to purchase equipment. “We have invested it, among other things, to improve audiovisual capabilities with the purchase of a 75-inch television, a film projector, a resin drying machine for the 3D printing, a camera to control the 3D printer”, said the president of the Mibu association, Antonio Maximiano García.
Traditions
These grants also support the work of the associations in maintaining our culture and traditions, "the main objective of this association is to perform the old dances from Mijas", explained Carolina Lara, president of the Asociación Socio-Cultural Coros y Danzas de Mijas, who also explained that the grant has been allocated "to the celebration of the folklore festivals we organise". In the Peña Falmenca del Sur, the aid has been used "to buy four loudspeakers, monitors, a television so that the events can be seen from the terrace, a camera to record the events", explained María Luisa Laso, secretary of the peña, who recalled that "everything we organise is to preserve and promote flamenco".
Practically all these groups survive thanks to the fees paid by their members and the financial support they receive from entities such as the Mijas Town Hall. "If it wasn't for the help, the subsidies, we receive from the Town Hall, little we can do, because anything that is done is worth a lot of money", said Juan Bosco, while Carolina Lara pointed out that “it is a great help, they have given us what we have invested, the running costs, and the truth is that they have helped us a lot”. "It helps us a lot, of course, because otherwise we wouldn't be able to do much", concluded Laso.
