The ‘Asociación Grupo Joven Virgen de la Peña’ (Virgen de la Peña Youth Group Association) has been declared of Municipal Public Utility by the entire Mijas Town Hall Plenary as a response to its involvement in Mijas traditions and its participation in various events, mobilising neighbours of all ages. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), highlighted in the ordinary plenary session in December, held on Monday 30th, the work of this group “that does so much good for our municipality and not only maintaining the traditions and culture but also involving those who are less young”. “We are happy and proud”, concluded the mayoress, who highlighted their participation in important moments in the town, such as the events in honour of the patron saint of Mijas, the Virgen de la Peña, and Christmas.
After studying the documentation presented by the association, the area of Citizen Participation issued a favourable report for the recognition to be taken to plenary, as it concluded that it complies with the requirements established in articles 32 and 33 of the Organic Regulations of Citizen Participation. From the area, the councillor Silvia Marín (PP), highlighted some of the activities carried out by the Virgen de la Peña Youth Group on specific dates. Thus, they were the creators of the dome that reigned over Mijas during the fair in honour of the perpetual mayoress. They were also responsible for the arrival of the royal postman last Saturday 28th to the village. They did it, underlined Marín, “elaborating the decoration of the floats and decorations of all the streets, which is to be praise”’. The councillor also wanted to “thank the group for creating this distinguishing feature for the town of Mijas” and highlighted their collaboration with the Town Hall through the board of festivities.
Support from the opposition
From the opposition they also highlighted the work of these young people who are committed to keeping alive the traditions of Mijas. “This group has that special bond with our patron saint and, moreover, they have that willingness and something that makes us very happy, they are young people who come with new energy and spread it to the rest of the neighbours”, said the PSOE councillor Josele González, who highlighted the collaboration of the group in different events during his term of office.
“We are aware that if we want our traditions to continue we have to encourage and involve young people so that all traditions continue and, of course, support a group so involved in our culture as is the Youth Group”, said the councillor for Cs, Mariló Olmedo.
Greetings for the new year
At the end of the plenary session, the mayoress took the floor to express her best wishes for the new year to all the corporation and the neighbours of the municipality.
