The mayoress appeals to citizens' responsibility during the DANA

  • La alcaldesa se acercó esta mañana al polígono La Vega.

Ana Mata visits some flood risk areas in the municipality, such as the area around the river and the La Vega industrial park

The Mijas Town Hall with the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata (PP), at the head, is closely following the evolution of the DANA in the city and the rest of the Costa del Sol. During the morning, the mayoress of Mijas supervised first hand some of the flood risk areas in the municipality, accompanied by other councillors of the government team such as the Works and Infrastructure, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), or the Civil Protection and Fire, Francisco Jerez (Vox).

In this sense, Mata valued that, in most cases, "the citizens have acted responsibly in the face of such an unpredictable situation as that caused by a DANA, which suddenly turns everything upside down, as it has done in the areas of La Cala, Torrenueva and El Bombo, with this tornado which has caused some damage, among them, to the installations of the Galp petrol station in La Noria’.  everything as it has done in the areas of La Cala, Torrenueva and El Bombo, with this tornado that has caused some damage, among them, in the facilities of the Galp petrol station in La Noria".

On the subject, the mayoress said that "citizens, now more than ever, are aware of the danger that these adverse conditions can bring, and we have seen it in Valencia but also closer, in several municipalities in the province", so she insisted on the importance of "staying at home as far as possible in the coming hours".

Mata also highlighted the coordination work between the Local Police, Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, through the Municipal Emergency Plan, "through which the personnel are responsible for monitoring the most sensitive areas, such as the river Fuengirola, where it is true that this morning, when there was still no water in the riverbed, some vehicles were seen crossing this point, something that does not seem appropriate, especially when we have been warning of the complicated situation since last night, with the general warning given by Civil Protection".

On her way through the Polígono La Vega, the mayoress noted that "this road, with its considerable slope, turns into a large lagoon in a few minutes when it rains heavily", for which she thanked the gesture of all those businessmen "who have decided to close the facilities as a preventive measure".

Mata also went to the centre of La Cala, where the new municipal swimming pool is located, which this morning began to show leaks, filtrations and waterlogged floors, "something that worries us because these are works that have not yet been completed or received and that, as soon as the first heavy rains have come, have registered damage". In this sense, the mayoress regretted that "these very new facilities are still in need of technical repairs due to the defects of the work".

Impressions of the councillor for Fire and Civil Protection

Also during this visit, the councillor for Fire and Civil Protection, Francisco Jerez (Vox), took stock of the preventive actions carried out up to that moment by the personnel of both security forces. In this regard, Jerez explained that the work carried out until midday was "to inform and give recommendations to the public, especially those who live in areas that flood easily, such as Los Cordobeses in La Cala and around La Alberquilla, where we know that many residents, as a precaution, have chosen to move to other parts of the municipality, either with family or friends, and they have also moved their animals to safer places.

Jerez was also cautious about the rainfall recorded so far, "especially because we must also take into account that it has rained quite a lot in neighbouring municipalities such as Alhaurín and Coín, and all that water then comes down to our municipality".
