We keep up with the seniors who are part of the first shift of the trip to Melilla organised by the Mijas Town Hall. The second day, this Tuesday, began, as it should, with a good breakfast at the 4-star Hotel Melilla Puerto where they are staying, to get their strength back for a walking tour of the city.
The expedition set off early in the morning to discover the autonomous city, located on the Tres Forcas cape. During the visit they had guides who explained the characteristics of the city, its monuments, history and culture, one of them was Mari Carmen Pons, who said that "Melilla is a wonderful city open to anyone who wants to visit it".
Visiting the fortress built between the 16th and 18th centuries was a must, with warehouses, cisterns, bastions, moats, forts, caves, mines, chapels and hospitals, making it the most complete on this shore of the Mediterranean, apart from the neo-medieval outer forts, built at the end of the 19th century. A city that invites you to stroll through its streets and enjoy its architectural heritage, which is considered, along with that of Barcelona and above that of Madrid and Valencia, as one of the best examples of the Spanish modernist style of the early 20th century. During the tour they stopped at tourist attractions such as the Plaza de la Maestranza. "In the Plaza de la Maestranza are the cisterns, something very symbolic of Melilla, it dates back to the 15th and 16th century, they are also called pourers because rainwater is filtered through them, at that time there were about 1,000 people in Melilla, who got their water supply from them", explained Mari Carmen.
This trip has one main objective, that the elderly of Mijas enjoy a well-deserved holiday and get to know other cities, and we can assure you that this is what they are doing. During the second day of the trip, they also visited the Museum of History and Ethnography and the lighthouse. In the afternoon they had free time, some of them took advantage of it to explore the city while others rested to recharge their batteries for today, their last day, in which they will continue learning more about Melilla, its history and its culture. In the evening they enjoyed a gala dinner and entertainment at the hotel.
The senior citizes of Mijas, who were accompanied by the councillor responsible for the area, Silvia Marín (PP), and by the councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), were received on Tuesday by the president of the autonomous city, Juan José Imbroda, at the Melilla City Hall. During the reception, the councillor for the Senior Citizens presented the local authorities with a painting and several gifts from Mijas. "I would like to thank the President of Melilla for the reception he gave us; they have gone out of their way to provide us with tickets to the museums and tours of the different areas of Melilla. As I said, we are grateful for their attention", said Marín.
