The Royal British Legion (RBL) chose the municipality of Mijas, specifically the town of La Cala, to parade for the first time on the Costa del Sol. It did so on Saturday, marching through the main streets of the seaside town, and as part of the events organised around the so-called Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day.

"This is the first time that the British Legion has come to Mijas and we are sure that it will not be the last", said the councillor for Foreigners of Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo (PP), adding that "with these events, the British remember the end of the First World War, paying tribute to all the soldiers who fell in that war”.

"This is the first time ever that we've done a parade like this. We do it for Remembrance Sunday, which is in November. We do various events across the coast and also from Estepona all the way to the north of Spain. It's all for the veterans", said Matthew Jones, standard-bearer in the South Spain district.

 

During the event and also during the coming weeks, the Royal British Legion will be selling its traditional and symbolic poppies, "which help former British soldiers and also their families", said Neal Toplis, president of RBL in southern Spain. You can get your poppy here.

 

The parade started at midday in la Butibamba Park and was attended by people of different nationalities, pipers, cars decorated for the occasion, members of the British Legion, flag bearers and all those who attended to support the cause.
