The Ukrainian association Espacio Cultural has been exhibiting ‘Strong Nation’ at the Cristóbal Ruiz Cultural Centre in La Cala since Friday 27th of October. It is a collective exhibition of fifteen Ukrainian artists hosted in Spain and a military photographer who express through art how they feel about their country. They also want to show that the conflict continues. "With this exhibition people can get to know Ukraine better and get to know our art, which is very different, we have different styles", said Oksana Yeromenko, one of the artists involved. The artists live in Mijas, Fuengirola and other parts of the country such as Seville and La Rioja.
"These are paintings by each of the artists. They have approximately ten paintings each on display, some have less, some more, and we want to express our present, our suffering, which is expressed on one side of the exhibition, and, on the other side of the exhibition, we are gradually looking to the future", says the president of the association, Galyna Lisnycha.
The future for them is for their country "to stop being at war", said the president. With the hundreds of works on display, which include more than just paintings, they express what they are feeling. All of the works are for sale and the proceeds will be used to send basic necessities to the areas in conflict.
The Mijas Town Hall did not hesitate to open the doors of the cultural centre to exhibit the art of these Ukrainian women, some of whom are already established artists. In addition, there was also an exhibition of Ukrainian folklore and various items of clothing and objects."We continue to work along these lines so that foreign residents also see in Mijas the possibility of expressing their art because this is part of our cultural and tourist offer. A municipality like Mijas, with 125 nationalities, coexisting with a 46% foreign population, is an open, tolerant and, above all, integrating municipality", said the councillor for Culture at Mijas Town Hall, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP). "They are people who live in Mijas and the surrounding areas who have decided to share part of their culture and tradition with all Mijeños", said the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), who advocated sharing Ukrainian culture with Spanish culture.
