The Mijas Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's patients (AFA Mijas) will commemorate this week the world day of this disease with different activities, all of them intended to inform about the help provided by the group to patients and relatives, but also to raise awareness of Alzheimer's, which is on the increase in Spain, said this Tuesday the psychologist and manager of the day centre, Mari Carmen López, "in fact, more than 60 percent of the cases of dementia diagnosed in Spain, are Alzheimer's.
For this reason, from AFA Mijas they emphasise the importance of increasing resources to prevent and treat this disease. Likewise, López considered that "the Dependency Law should be reviewed thoroughly, because it does not cover the needs of people with this disease either".
Programmed activities
AFA Mijas has organised different activities to celebrate World Alzheimer's Day. The first will be an open day at its day centre, located in Avenida de Mijas, so that the public can get to know how it works. It will take place this Thursday, 18th of September, from 16:00 hours.
The group will also set up tables on the streets to inform the public about their services. On Friday 20th in the morning, they will be in the Municipal Market in Mijas Pueblo, the Folk Museum and in Las Lagunas, in the San Valentín Square, while on Saturday 21st they will set up tables in the Branch Office Square in La Cala Plaza and, again, in the Folk Museum.
The programme of activities will conclude on the 21st of September at 20:00 with the play ‘En el baúl de los recuerdos’ at the Manuel España Theatre. "It's a tragicomedy by Manolo Medina, Miguel Caiceo and Melu, which talks about Alzheimer's but from a comical point of view, so we'll have a great time", said López.
Places
The proceeds from the play will help AFA Mijas to continue working and helping patients and their families, especially those who do not have a place at the centre, because as the director of the day centre said, "if the elderly had to pay, with their pensions, the real price of a place, only a few would be able to afford it", and added that the association continues "working, trying to access all possible grants and subsidies, including those from Mijas Town Hall, in order to maintain the resources and the services so that the elderly can receive their treatment".
