They say that this is the best time of the year to travel but also to stay in Mijas. September is still summer but with mild temperatures and without the heavy tourism levels typical of July and August all over the country. This month welcomes a different type of tourist. The approaching back-to-school season has reduced the number of families and increased the number of older visitors, both national and foreign, who like to enjoy this path next to the sea, the beach and the 'chiringuitos' (beach bars), like this man we met on the Coastal Path last Sunday, Diego Jiménez, who is from Alhaurín de la Torre, but is thinking of "becoming a Mijeño" because "we live in Alhaurín de la Torre but we have bought a flat in Mijas which is under construction, so we come to see how it is going and on the way we love to walk along the Coastal Path; we come almost every week. It will be finished next year, so then we will spend more time in Mijas, and maybe we will decide to move here, depending on how it's going", he said.

If so, welcome to Mijas as a resident. Every year more and more people move to our municipality, as is shown by the municipal census, which is constantly growing, with numbers that today exceed 91,000 registered in the municipality. An example of this is Francisco Sánchez, originally from Seville but for years a resident of Sitio de Calahonda, who has clearly witnessed the change that, he says, the town has undergone with the creation of the Coastal Path: "when they started to build this route from the port of Cabopino to La Cala, it changed our lives".

 

Miguel Méndez from Jaén came to Mijas for a week and is thinking of staying for another one "because this area is wonderful, apart from the fact that we have the coast, we have many areas where we can go shopping, for a walk, and to restaurants, so we are making the most of it".

As you can imagine, many people take advantage of these reasons to go on holiday during the month of September. The forecasts for this month are good. According to Aehcos, hotel occupancy in the province of Malaga this month is expected to be 88.74% compared to 86.75% in 2023.
