In Mijas, the little ones are enjoying the summer camps at the Entrerríos municipal hostel. The first group of August, made up of children from 4 to 11 years old, is about to finish their holiday after five days of outdoor activities and sports in nature.
The hostel is currently at full capacity. The aim of this programme is clear. According to the councillor in charge, Silvia Marín (PP), "today I wanted to come and visit the hostel and meet the children on this shift. It is wonderful to see how much the children enjoy all the activities we have programmed, looking after the animals, visiting the vegetable gardens to see how the land is worked and tilled and enjoying the environment. Our aim is without a doubt that they have a good time".
During the holidays, the hostel will welcome around 500 children, including groups of integration children who participate in all shifts. More than 25 people, including instructors, lifeguards, operators, cooks, nursing and cleaning staff, are working at the complex this summer to ensure that the children have a fun summer full of activities. The children enjoy the swimming pool, the sports activities and the camping outings in the countryside. Spending time with their friends is the most exciting thing for them, as well as being able to sleep away from home in collective rooms with all their classmates, where jokes and games are never lacking.
As in every edition, the environmental values and respect for nature are present in all the activities they organised: workshops, games, theatre, multisports, camping, hiking and a big 'got talent' party to say goodbye to the camp. This fifth shift has enjoyed a fun week with friends where the experience in nature and learning have been unforgettable.
The little ones highlighted some of the values they have learnt at the hostel. This is the case of Hugo López, who surprised us with his reflection. "I have learned that screens are not everything. At home, for example, I spent all day with my mobile phone and game console, and now I've come here and I'm enjoying without it. However, there are friends who want to go home to continue using the tablet", said the boy. Naira Lobato affirmed that "I have learned to respect all my classmates", and Ainhoa Vega said that "I have seen how important it is to live in harmony". For her part, Ariana Rojas said that "they have taught us that we don't have to spend all day with screens and that we also have fun playing in nature". Erika Lavinia also stressed the importance of "not being on our phones or screens all the time" and recalled "the importance of appreciating water and not wasting it".
This group will say goodbye on Friday 9th of August, and on Monday another group of teenagers will start their holiday. The children have had the opportunity to visit the vegetable garden and learn how to harvest, eat figs, groom Currita, the donkey of the farm school, visit the goats and do lots of sport, including games in the swimming pool. Making children happy is the best outcome the hostel can achieve.
