La Junta grants the tourism sector 40 million euros to mitigate the effects of the drought

  • La sequía sigue preocupando a las empresas que dependen del turismo en su totalidad.

The mayoress of Mijas met on Monday with entrepreneurs from the municipality to inform them about these subsidies for tourism.

The Ministry for Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía announced last week that it will finance energy efficiency and circular economy projects for tourism businesses to tackle the current drought situation. The grants amount to 40 million euros and are an incentive aimed at greater water reuse.

On Monday, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), met in La Cala with entrepreneurs from the tourism sector to provide them with this information. "It is a sector that is constantly making investments, it is also adapting to the new regulations to mitigate the drought and to adapt to climate change. This grant is specifically aimed at them, at beach bars, restaurants, hotels, tourist accommodation, golf courses; in short, at all those establishments that in some way contribute to the economy of our town", she said.

In order to facilitate participation and ensure that the greatest number of entrepreneurs can apply to the grants, two lines of subsidies have been established depending on the type of establishment: line 1, dedicated to accommodation companies and other services linked to tourism, and line 2, which is aimed at restaurant businesses.

Mata said that it is "a great opportunity for the sector to be able to present those projects that they consider interesting and, above all, necessary. The drought made us realise that water is a scarce resource and that we have to put all our energy and our will into creating the necessary infrastructures so that we don't waste water".

Water reuse, flow reduction, adaptation of infrastructures to avoid excess heat/cold or the installation of green roofs are some of the eligible projects. This is why this business sector has positively welcomed the information. This was stated by the delegate of the Mijas beach entrepreneurs, Carlos Morales, who said that the initiative "is very interesting, due to the current drought situation", and added that "the subsidies will pay 65% of the projects, which will serve to improve business in the sector".

The application process for the subsidies is 100% online at the Regional Ministry's Virtual Office. The estimated deadline is 20 working days from the publication of the announcement.
