The training programme for young volunteers of AFA Mijas has been running for 20 years. On Friday 28th of July, around thirty teenagers attended this course given by the director and psychologist of the association's day centre, Mari Carmen López: "We have had a total of 27 young people in person and two have attended online, they are young people from Las Lagunas, Torremolinos, La Cala, Mijas and Benalmádena".
For two hours, in the municipal library of Mijas Pueblo, López explained to them different issues related to the disease and the functioning and services provided by AFA Mijas in its day centre. "We have told them about the disease, its most characteristic symptoms, the activities carried out in our centre, the treatment we provide, as well as a guide on how they have to work with our users once they join the volunteer programme", explained López, who pointed out that, previously, "a questionnaire was carried out to find out what knowledge or training they have about Alzheimer's disease or dementia or if they have had or have experience with family members who have suffered from it".
From now on, as the director of the day centre said, "they can join the activities at the centre as volunteers, they will be there during July and August, and what we do is to make a schedule with shifts so that they come 2 or 3 times a week on average, although some of them come every day".
During these two months that the young people will dedicate their time and affection to the users of AFA Mijas, they will hold an assembly every Friday, in order to follow up, says López, "to find out how the week has gone, to do group dynamics and thus encourage group cohesion and to get to know each other". She also pointed out that these young volunteers "will only be able to collaborate with AFA Mijas during the school holidays".
