The supervision of the work of the cleaning company and the work done to raise public awareness are some of the reasons that justify the recognition

The councillor for Street Cleaning at Mijas Town Hall, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), has announced that the municipality has been awarded the Platinum Broom in the 2024 edition. This is an international award that highlights the efforts in street cleaning and waste collection, as well as technological initiatives and environmental awareness.

The prize, awarded at the XXI edition of the International Fair TECMA 2024, International Fair of Urbanism and Environment, held in Madrid last week (18th- 20th of June), is the result of the competition organised by Ategrus (Technical Association for Waste Management and Environment), the only Spanish entity that covers all waste management systems, urban cleaning and environment and that brings together municipalities, companies and technicians of the sector in order to share their experiences and exchange criteria.

Among the reasons for this recognition are the continuous supervision of the work of the cleaning company, the implementation of protocols and work systems designed specifically for the needs of Mijas and the information and awareness-raising work carried out with the local residents.

Appreciation

For all these reasons, Belmonte was pleased and grateful for the daily work carried out by the Street Cleaning Department: "I am proud to have been able to represent our neighbours, as we must not forget that this award is theirs, thanks to their daily collaboration in making our streets cleaner. I would also like to highlight the tireless work of the workers, who are essential to make this recognition a reality".

Control

During his speech Belmonte recalled that one of the priorities of the government team "is to exercise control over the company awarded the contract, over the services and whether they are being carried out properly and, in short, to ensure that everything established in the contract is correctly fulfilled. We have shown that with the same means we can do much more and it is very gratifying".

To this end, the work routes have been redesigned and an intense focus has been placed on the stains caused on the pavements by dog urine. He also wanted to highlight the service of collecting household waste directly at the door of residents' doorsteps and that, thanks to the information and awareness-raising work carried out over the last few months, the number of requests has increased by 600%, "going from 15 requests for collection per day to 90", says the councillor.

Reinforcement

For this reason, the councillor announced that work is underway to reinforce this service to meet the growing demand. In fact, a website and an app are being developed, in Spanish and English, "to make it easier for Mijas residents to make appointments for home furniture collection, which is in its final phase and will soon be presented to all citizens so that they can make use of this new tool that will significantly improve the experience of residents, making it much simpler".
