The initiative is co-financed by the Junta de Andalucía and European funds and has the collaboration of the Mijas Town Hall

A new stage has begun for 30 unemployed people from the town, students of two employment and training projects that seek to promote employability in the municipality. This was highlighted on Thursday 13th by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), in the Training and Employment Building in Las Lagunas, where, together with the councillor for Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), the delegate for Employment, Carmen Sánchez, and the director of the Territorial Employment Area, Carlos Blanco, she received the participants of this programme.

“This is a great opportunity that the Junta de Andalucía gives us to continue training people. Moreover, it is a paid training, that is, while you are learning, you are receiving the minimum wage, so it is a great opportunity for those who have been selected, 15 per course, and what we intend is to continue lowering the unemployment rate we have in our municipality and that compared to last year we have lowered considerably”, said the mayoress.

The programme, which has the collaboration of the Mijas Town Hall, is co-financed by the Junta de Andalucía with a budget of 840,000 euros. It is, according to Sánchez, “the flagship project of this department. It is co-financed by the European Social Fund and we all have to be aware of the effort it takes to ensure that 30 people receive their minimum wage this year and have good teachers; I know that they have invested in it very willingly so that they will never again set foot in an unemployment office”.

The delegate added that “in addition, on completion, they will receive a certificate of professionalism, a guarantee that they have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills and the necessary proficiency to develop a career”.

For his part, the councillor for Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), said that the courses offered “are in high demand in the market, such as tourism promotion in a municipality like Mijas, therefore, training for a year, will result in achieving employability for these people”.

  • Cada curso cuenta con 15 alumnos en sus filas. Hoy, los 30 eran recibido por las autoridades antes de comienzo de las clases.

All thirty are confident that they will find a job at the end of this programme, which some have defined as a direct journey to employment or a stepping stone to the labour market.

This is what María del Mar Ríos, a student on the administrative management course, said: “At first sight, the course seems to be very complete because it includes theoretical and practical training; I think it will give us the tools we need, that springboard to the labour market, so it is most likely that, when we finish, things will be much easier for us to find a stable job, which is the ultimate goal”. All of them are ready to take advantage of this opportunity after fulfilling the requirements for the courses, such as having an A2 level of English and having the ESO, in one case, and the Baccalaureate or a higher degree, in another.

This was the opinion of Óscar García, a student on the tourism promotion course, who said that “this course suits me because what I am looking for is to build a professional career, to open up new frontiers and communication. I think this is my place and I’m looking forward to starting and working hard on it”.
