The exhibition of the UP handicrafts workshop run by the teacher Lourdes Ruiz can be seen at the Cultural Centre in La Cala de Mijas until next Thursday 6th of June. In her classes, the students have worked on everything from fabrics made with the macramé technique to the restoration of damaged objects, opening up a world of possibilities for the students. "In these classes we do everything, we crochet, knit, we restore and recycle things that are ready to be thrown away or even that we have picked up from a bin, and the truth is that they look very pretty", said one of the workshop students, Chari Fernández, at the inauguration of the exhibition on Friday 24th.
The exhibition showcases the wide variety of work that the students have done during this course, which not only teaches them handicraft techniques but also helps them to escape and socialise. "It's the first year I've been here, I'm registered in La Cala and I'm retired... I asked myself 'what can I do, I have to get involved in this beautiful village'. Then I came and saw the handicrafts, which I really like, and I loved the classes", said Sebastiana Martos. "You have to do something, you have to entertain yourself and get away from your problems for a while, that's why I come here", added another student, Pepi Ramírez. But little by little, the workshop students are capable of making a work of art with their own hands.
