On Thursday 23rd, took place the second edition of the Employment Day ‘Ocúpate’, organised by the NGO Red Cross with the collaboration of the Mijas Town Hall. Around twenty companies from the province, mainly from the tourism and service sectors, took part in the event, where almost 400 applicants for employment were also interviewed. 

The aim of this event was to create jobs, especially now that the high season is coming. Last year, 150 people got a job thanks to this event. “Today we have 18 companies here in Mijas that are going to interview almost 400 people, and many of them will certainly be hired”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), also recalling that “the administrations must collaborate and work closely with entities and NGOs to try to reduce the unemployment rate in the municipality, which is already at 13.6 percent, but we want it to keep decreasing even more”.

Red Cross Employment Plan

The day was part of the employment plan promoted by the Red Cross and, after its first edition in Mijas last year, it has been extended to other towns in Málaga such as Vélez Málaga, Marbella and the capital. In this sense, Luis Utrilla, the provincial president of the NGO, took advantage of his visit to the municipality to thank the involvement of Mijas Town Hall which, on this occasion, has allocated 10,000 euros to develop this initiative. “They are always willing to help and we, from the Red Cross, simply aim to help companies and workers, so that they can find employment solutions, which in the end are the matters that change the lives of families”, he said. 

The ‘Ocúpate’ day aims to respond to the employment needs of key sectors on the Costa del Sol. In this sense, the Councillor for Social Inclusion, Melisa Ceballos (PP), said that ‘in this fair in Mijas we find a variety of companies, both catering and hotels, also the construction sector that we know are demanding skilled labourers and builders, without forgetting the homecare sector, which increasingly needs more staff to assist our neighbours in a situation of dependency’. 

The PSOE councillors in Mijas also visited this job fair. Josele González insisted on the importance of taking care and maintaining this initiative to generate job opportunities for people who are unemployed or looking to improve their employment situation.
