The delegate for Educational Development and Vocational Training and University, Research and Innovation, Miguel Briones, and the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), visited this Monday the construction site of the Ana Carmona 'Veleta' secondary school, which is being built in Las Lagunas, next to the Indira Gandhi school, where the classes of the new centre are being taught since 2019. This is one of the technical visits that are regularly carried out by both the Town Hall and the Junta de Andalucía to check the state of the works.
The execution of the project, after overcoming some obstacles, according to both institutions, has now entered the home straight. "This institute is an imperative need that we have in the municipality. The truth is that there is a situation that is affecting many works and that is the lack of staff but, even so, it is true that the delegation is also very concerned that this work is completed as soon as possible, especially to respond to the students in Mijas", said the Mijas mayoress after visiting the facilities. For his part, the delegate for Education said that the works, which have had an investment of more than 6 million euros, "are at approximately 85% of its execution. We believe that, according to what the management of the works told us, it will be finished by this summer and, therefore, we will move in and equip the building so that it can be operational", Briones pointed out.
Institutional collaboration
Works on the centre began on November 11th 2021 with an investment of more than 6 million euros. The new complex will be built on a 7,358 square metre plot next to the Indira Gandhi school in Las Lagunas. It will be a D6 secondary school, i.e. with six lines, which will create 720 new school places. The company responsible for the work on the new school in Las Lagunas is Lirola Ingeniería y Obras, S. L.
On April 9th the document was signed between the Junta de Andalucía and the Town Hall formalising the free transfer of the plot of land located in the area of Las Lagunas, on which the school is being built, to the Junta de Andalucía. "I would like to thank the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, for her willingness to be responsible for this municipality, where the needs of schooling have been shown to be imperative to be undertaken by the Andalusian Government. We are carrying out this visit today to see the evolution of a work that we consider very necessary for all incoming students, in a town that is continually experiencing exponential growth and, therefore, needs to be addressed", said the delegate for Education. For her part, the mayoress of Mijas added that she will continue to "insist and demand from the Junta de Andalucía the necessary infrastructures to cover the historical demand for education in the town". "This is a visit that I sometimes make informally to check the pace of the work because, without a doubt, there is a commitment by the Junta and also by us, as responsible for the municipality of Mijas, with the parents so that the next school year will begin in these new facilities", concluded Mata.

The new secondary school in La Lagunas will have 24 multi-purpose classrooms for secondary school, a library, a gymnasium with changing rooms, two music classrooms, two art classrooms and two workshop classrooms, two laboratories, ten departments and six classrooms for double teaching and pedagogical reinforcement. There will also be a classroom for special education with its corresponding adapted toilet.
The administration area will have a secretary's office and archive, caretaker's office and reprographics, teachers' room, management offices, guidance secretary's office, head of studies and offices for the Parents' Association. A cafeteria, storage room for supplies, cleaning room and toilets, changing rooms for non-teaching staff and mechanical rooms are also planned.
