It was 15:21 hours last Friday when the Emergency Services of 112 alerted the Mijas Fire Brigade that two hikers, who were near the Pico de Mijas (the highest peak of the Sierra de Mijas with an altitude of 1,150 metres above sea level), were unable to return, that they had symptoms of hypothermia due to the bad weather conditions, cold, fog and wind, and that one of them, in addition, had mobility problems. Precisely these circumstances, together with the state of the terrain, a rugged area, and the lack of visibility as night fell, made the rescue of these people difficult and prolonged, and their search was also complicated as the location provided was not entirely accurate.
The device set in motion activated the GREIM (Special Mountain Intervention Rescue Group) of the Guardia Civil, who arrived at the scene to join the search. Once located, the troops acted to reduce the symptoms of hypothermia in the hikers and began to carry one of them on a stretcher. In coordination with the Local Police and 061, they immediately proceeded to transfer them to hospital facilities. The intervention ended at 23:15 hours.
