Last Saturday, the preliminaries of the 16th edition of the Torreón del Cante flamenco contest began at the Peña Flamenca del Sur. This year the contest is dedicated to the late Diego Pérez, former president of the Málaga Federation of 'Peñas'.
Antonio Miguel Carvajal, on vocals, was accompanied on guitar by Carlos Haro, whom opened a competition with a long tradition that was born in 1987 to promote flamenco and showcase representative flamenco singers (cantaores), which is part of the heritage of humanity and which the 'peñas' are responsible for preserving.
"Tonight we have started the ‘Torreón del Cante' contest with two singers, with enthusiasm and willing to work, to see if the contest turns out good and beautiful", said José Martín Navas, vice-president of the Peña Flamenca del Sur.
Another of the guest singers was Joaquín Cabello 'El Quini'. "I was motivated because I was very excited about the official guitarist. Besides, I hadn't been to this contest for years, at the beginning I came to some editions", said 'El Quini'.
'Malagueñas', 'soleares', 'alegrías de Cádiz' and 'granaínas' were heard on stage last Saturday in tribute to Diego Pérez, who through his good work and good heart managed to unite the 'peñas flamencas', who passed away in 2021 and who defended the culture of flamenco.
