The sanctuary Donkey Dreamland in Mijas is looking for funding for its rescue, recovery and maintenance projects for these animals. A neighbour and friend of the centre, Daniella Moreno, has started a crowdfunding campaign on social media to obtain funding through the gofundme.com platform. So far they have raised more than 1,000 euros and the campaign is still open.
According to Amaya Isert, founder of Donkey Dreamland, "this new collaboration has been created by a girl who has been following us for a long time and has taken the initiative of crowdfunding. She has already started it on tiktok and the truth is that we are very grateful. We want to use all the money we raise for maintenance costs, because the shelter is fine but things get broken, including the fences, and we also want to put new shades, both for the animals and for visitors".
Donkey Dreamland also carries out other fundraising initiatives. "Until it gets warmer in the summer, it's the perfect time to take the donkeys on walks in the hills around the sanctuary. We are doing an event soon, with a lunch, paella and flamenco, all mixed in with our donkeys and activities for everyone. We are always open on weekends for visits, be it families, groups, friends... We also offer walks to the donkeys. Lots of things", Isert said.
It should be noted that, after three years of hard work, Donkey Dreamland has managed to rescue 47 equines over this time, with the collaboration of other organisations such as Seprona, and a lot of documentation work, veterinary care and maintenance of the animals. Currently, 13 donkeys are being cared for in their centre and they are also looking for rehoming places for them. After the expansion of their facilities, their finca in La Cala de Mijas has the capacity to house up to 24 animals.
On the other hand, the number of volunteers who collaborate with this sanctuary and its different initiatives is also growing. Currently, 26 volunteers clean stables and paddocks, feed and water the donkeys, walk, groom and brush them daily, all in different shifts.
One of the volunteers, Rose Mary Osmond, talks about her experience at the sanctuary. "I help with everything that is needed, cleaning, doing things around the farm, feeding the animals. For me, these animals are perfect, each one has its own personality, they are fabulous". Rose Mary used to live in England, in the countryside, and this place is a paradise for her. "I also help walking the donkeys, with events and celebrations. The people at this shelter are very nice, they love animals, they are very empathetic with them", she said.
