From the archive they remind citizens of the custody service of old documents that they offer to the public for free

Those of us who know the Municipal Historical Archive of Mijas (located on Avenida de Méjico) are well aware of the treasures that this centre holds: numerous documents relating historical events of the town and the registers of ancestral inhabitants, which have helped to reconstruct family trees of neighbours, a valuable archive available to anyone who wants to visit this centre. The coordinator of the Historical Heritage Department, Desiré Piñero, points out that "on the third Thursday of each month, from 11am to 12:30pm, we offer guided tours to show how a historical archive works, what it is, what documents are kept, how they can be consulted; in short, we can show how to learn about the different events that are part of the history of Mijas through our documentary heritage".

This programme, set up by the Historical Heritage Department of the Mijas Town Hall, continues its course and is proving to be, as Piñero points out, "a great success" for the user, since "people have loved the visits we have made so far, they have been very successful, because those who have come here have been able to learn how the archive works, how to consult and there are even people who have managed to read something familiar in the sample of documents we have here".

Anyone interested in taking part in these guided tours should send an email to archivo@mijas.es with their personal details (name and surname) and telephone number. They can also make a reservation by calling 952 485 900.

Custody of private documents

On the other hand, the Municipal Historical Archive of Mijas reminds us of another valuable service they provide at no cost: the custody of private documents, "a service we offer to all citizens in which we commit ourselves to the custody of this documentation without losing its ownership", explains the centre's technician Patricia Núñez, who adds that "we issue a report which reflects the ownership of the documentation and we keep it here in our warehouse in constant temperature and humidity conditions, which allows its permanent preservation".

If you need to preserve archives of photos, plans or other documents more than 70 years old, there is a place for you here. You can request this service by email or at the centre itself.
