The programme 'Mujeres sin +', of the Mijas Town Hall's Family and Equal Opportunities Department, is already underway, with which the town commemorates 8M, International Women's Day, creating spaces to debate, reflect and meet. The first activity took place on Monday, with the inauguration of the collective exhibition FemArt, which invites us to get to know the art of a large group of local women artists in different fields.
In FemArt, photographs, paintings and sculptures; fashion, crafts and even literature become tools to commemorate 8M. "Above all it is women's art, it is craftwork by women of the municipality where they express themselves. One of them has written her life lessons in a book. She told me that she could never write so much and she is already on her second book... I think it is very good to be able to share and see how they express their emotions through art", explained the coordinator of the Municipal Women's Information Centre (CMIM), Elizabeth Jaime, during the inauguration of the exhibition.
Among the exhibitors are also users of the Municipal Women's Centre, such as Ana Sonia Jaime, who signs the novel 'La historia de Angie. El Marcado' as A.J. Alcántara. "I have to say that I am a victim of gender violence, which is why the book is called 'El Marcado'. The book has been a way of liberating and expressing everything I had inside me, it is half biography, half fantasy", said the author, who indicated that "I can only say that when you need help, you have to ask for it, there is a wonderful team at the Women's Centre that will help you and guide you. I am very proud to exhibit on behalf of the centre".
Collectives such as the Association of New Culture of Development, the Sociocultural Association of Mijitas Women, exhibiting handicrafts made with crochet, painted fabrics or macrame, Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, which invites us to participate in the mural 'Walk with different shoes for gender equality', and the Association of Patients with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, Apaffer, also participates in this exhibition. "We wanted to be present on such an important day for women", said the president of Apaffer, Mercedes González.
In FemArt we can see paintings, resin works, sculptures, textiles, accessories, traditional crafts from Mijas, in leather or esparto grass, even works that come from other parts of the world. "What I bring is esparto grass from Mexican art, there is a great cultural diversity in Mexico. It came to me in an unexpected way and I started to develop it. There are two different parts: one is the sacred hearts that are from an area of Mexico and the other part represents the Huichol culture", explained the artisan Cristina Torres.
The FemArt exhibition can be visited until Friday 8th of March at the Cultural Centre in Las Lagunas. With it, Mijas commemorates 8M from different artistic expressions. "For me 8M was born as a day to demand rights, although it is thought that equality of rights has been achieved in Spain, there is still a lot to achieve", said the coordinator of the CMIM of Mijas, who added that "this day always makes us think, reflect. It's not that we want to be more, it's that we want to have the same rights. These are days of reflection, of meeting, of getting to know each other, in these spaces that also bring women together".

Exhibiting at FemArt are Sonia Lekuona, Cristina Torres, Apaffer (with paintings by Laura de cobellis, Rossa Lampignano, Purificación Lozano, Montse Campos), Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, Veronique Favrat, Josefa Postigo, ASociación Sociocultural Mujeres Mijitas, Lourdes Díaz, María José Calvente, Huildad Ríos, Asociación Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo, Liana Popa, Svetlana Rahmanova, Fatima Chbihi, Marie Carmen Melguizo, Ana Sonia Jaime, Marina Escama and UP students Marta de Oros, Marina Fernández, Laura Pérez, Alba Blanco and Sasha.
