A drunk driver drove his car onto the roundabout next to the San Manuel González church

  • The man tripled the permitted alcohol level, for which he will be fined for committing a road safety offence

The accident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning; a neighbour alerted the authorities on hearing the crash

At 5.27 hours on Sunday, a neighbour alerted the Mijas Local Police to an incident that had just taken place on the roundabout next to the San Manuel González church in Las Lagunas (at the intersection of Avenida Los Lirios and Calle Fucsia); a car had driven onto the roundabout and the two occupants of the vehicle were fleeing from the scene. In response, a police unit went to the area and managed to arrest the driver and passenger in the vicinity.

The officers subjected the driver, a 39 year old Irishman, to a breathalyser test and the result was an alcohol level of 0.80 mg/l, which is more than three times the permitted level, currently 0.25 mg/l in exhaled air. For this reason, the individual will be fined and investigated for an offence against road safety. He will also have to pay the cost of repairing the damage caused to the roundabout, which is currently being carried out by the Mijas Town Hall.
