This Monday the Andalusian Counsellor for Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Carmen Crespo (PP), visited Mijas to discuss various issues of importance to the municipality with the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP). The meeting focused especially on the problem of drought and the need to improve water infrastructures in the area.
In this regard, the Counsellor for Agriculture stressed that the Andalusian Government is working hard on the Malaga Water Highway project, which will transport this valuable resource from the Campo de Gibraltar to Axarquia, "and our goal is to finish the drafting of all the sections by the end of the year, and then begin to put them out to tender and develop them on a multi-annual basis". Crespo also specified that the section that interests Mijas is the one between Marbella and the El Toro reservoir, "a large-scale high-speed connection project with which the Regional Government is coming to the aid of Mijas, despite the fact that it does not fall within its jurisdiction, to guarantee a better supply to its main town". The Counsellor also pointed out that "there are certain areas where we have to improve the pipeline more urgently, and that is also the intention of the Mijas Town Hall, logically in common agreement with Acosol and the Regional Government of Andalusia".
For her part, the mayoress of Mijas highlighted the fact that the 'Junta' has already given its approval to increase the capacity of the Marbella desalination plant, "and this increase to 20 cubic hectometres will also benefit the municipality of Mijas so that we can reach the summer without any problems, despite the fact that we now have occasional restrictions, but this measure is also helping us to raise awareness among citizens that, in terms of water, we must all go hand in hand".

Both Mata and Crespo agreed on the importance of improving the water resources of the growing Andalusian municipalities, including Mijas, and regretted that this matter has been forgotten for many years. "I always remind those who visit us that Mijas is the third largest town in the province, which has undergone very important development in recent years but will continue to do so in the future, therefore, we want to be ahead of the water requirements, and we are grateful that Counsellor Carmen Crespo is concerned about the situation in Mijas", she concluded.
Signing in the book of honour of the Town Hall
As part of the visit, the Andalusian Regional Counsellor for Agriculture also signed the book of honour of the Mijas Town Hall, noting in her words the hospitality of the people of Mijas, which is also full of charming corners. "It is a municipality that is worthwhile, that has many needs and, of course, from the Regional Government of Andalusia we will collaborate with the mayoress and her team to continue improving the town in a balanced and organised manner, as the mayoress is doing", she concluded.
