Mijas conveys its condolences to the families of the victims of the fire in Valencia

  • A minute's silence was observed in memory of the ten people who died in the tragic incident, which occurred last Thursday
  • El minuto de silencio en memoria de las víctimas del incendio de Valencia ha tenido lugar en la Casa Consistorial.

This sign of respect and affection for the families affected took place at noon at the gates of the Town Hall

As in many other municipalities in the country, Mijas also observed a minute's silence on Monday for the ten victims of the fire that occurred last Thursday in the building in the Valencian neighbourhood of Campanar. This sign of respect and affection for the families of the victims took place at 12 noon at the gates of the Town Hall, and was attended by members of the corporation, municipal staff, neighbours, members of the Mijas Fire Brigade and local police officers.

"It is difficult to put oneself in the place of all those affected and of the Valencian residents in general because these are situations that are never expected, that go beyond what can happen on a daily basis, so today we must also highlight this union and coordination to try to ensure that events like this one that has happened in Valencia do not happen again in the rest of Spain", said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who also wanted to convey "our condolences to the families and friends of the victims of this tragic fire".

For his part, the spokesman for the Municipal PP Group in the Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo, said that "we deeply regret the death of these people and we are grateful for the good work of the firefighters and the solidarity of the neighbours". He also said he felt "very proud of the Mijas fire brigade, and events like this make us see the importance of inspection and prevention", stressing that "the government team will hold a meeting in the next few days to see if there are any areas where we can improve".

Vox councillor for the Mijas Town Hall Juan Carlos Cuevas pointed out that "without forgetting all the people who have lost everything, now we also need to know the exact reasons for the fire, because we hear a lot of things, and the Architects or Engineers Association will have to come up with specific regulations that can prevent this".

In this regard, the spokesman for the PSOE Municipal Group in the Mijas Town Hall, Roy Pérez, added "we have to learn from these things, so we invite the Town Hall, especially the Town Planning Department, to update the safety measures in buildings, especially those over 15 years old".

As well as expressing their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, this minute's silence also served to acknowledge the heroic work of the firefighters who put out the flames and saved the lives of several residents who were trapped in the building in Valencia. "The involvement of the firefighters and the State security forces in any misfortune of this kind is a real example of what public service means, even risking their lives", said Juan Carlos Maldonado, councillor for Por Mi Pueblo in the Mijas Town Hall.

Likewise, the sub-officer of the Mijas Fire and Rescue Service (SEIS), Francisco Manuel Mérida, said that "firefighters are never mentally prepared to deal with this type of situation, especially a fire like this, which develops so quickly and with such virulence... it is something that overwhelms you". The councillor for the Municipal Citizens' Group in the Mijas Town Hall, José Carlos Martín, also agreed, acknowledging the work of the firefighters "whom we saw acting practically in real time, and from here we want to give our support to these families and to the Valencians".
