The AECC in Mijas organises a walk through the Sierra to raise funds for research

The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Mijas invited everyone to enjoy a Sunday in the heart of nature with the organisation of a solidarity route of about six kilometres, which took the participants from La Cantera de Los Arenales to Jarapalos. The aim of this initiative was to raise funds for research and also to raise awareness about the NGO's project in the municipality. "This is the first solidarity route, and we hope that there will be many more, and that we can repeat them to give visibility to the association, so that all the residents of Mijas know that they can call us, that we are in the municipality and that they can count on us for anything they need", said the president of the AECC of Mijas, Lola Sanchís.

This route was attended by fifty people who did not hesitate to collaborate with the cause. "We walked from Mijas and now we are going to Jarapalos, we do many routes on Sundays through the Sierra de Mijas, I am not a member of the association, but I like to participate in everything they do", said one of the participants, Ana Diaz, who like the rest of the people who collaborated with this activity received a wristband from the NGO.

Among the participants, several councillors from the Mijas Town Hall, from the government team and the opposition, who also wanted to join this charity route. Among them, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), Hipólito Zapico (PSOE) and Mariló Olmedo (Cs).

"The AECC does very important and fundamental work and we all have to help together. Although they have only been in Mijas for a short time, they are very keen and have told me that they wanted to organise some swimming and during the year they will carry out various activities to help", said Alarcón.

For his part, Zapico said "we wanted to be here to accompany them and help them and make them aware of the important work they are doing while they are starting with the association, and they need everyone's support to be able to move forward with the objectives and projects they have".

In this regard, Olmedo said "we are supporting the AECC, which does a very special and necessary task, giving support to families and cancer patients, what it does is improve the quality of life of these people and we have to be aware that they need our support, both from the private sector and from the rest of the public administrations".

More events

This is one of the many initiatives that the Mijas AECC plans to organise to raise funds, as Sanchís announced. "Next weekend, on Friday, we will celebrate World Cancer Day by setting up information tables in the municipality and on February 15th at the Las Lagunas Theatre, we will have a free event where there will be a coach who will talk to us about personal motivation and self-growth".
