Malaga residents will spend more than 120 euros during the January sales

  • Clothing and footwear are the favourite purchases, followed far behind by home, leisure and computer products
  • Las rebajas se mantendrán hasta finales de febrero.

The signs are also up in the small neighbourhood shops of Mijas announcing the sales

On January 7th the traditional winter sales campaign officially began in Spain. According to the Spanish Consumers' Association, Malaga residents will spend between 120 and 190 euros on clothing and footwear, generally followed by other household, leisure and computer-related purchases.

It is estimated that 80 percent of the population will take advantage of this discount period, however, please remember that these days the only thing that should be cut is the price of the products or services, never the rights of the customer.

To insist on this issue, the Consumers' Organisation (OCU) recommends comparing the prices of items the days before the sales, always keeping the sales receipt, checking that the products are in good condition and, most importantly, avoiding unnecessary and compulsive purchases.

Sales in local shops

We took a stroll along Calle La Unión in Las Lagunas, where we found a large number of shops that have also put up signs with the offers. As well as taking advantage of the sales in online shopping or in large shopping centres, we have another option much closer to home, the local shops.

Nuria Bautista welcomed us to her clothing and accessories shop, Borboleta. The young businesswoman highlights some of the benefits of local shops: "I'll mention a point in my favour, for example, the products I put on offer in the sales are the ones I've had here all winter, I haven't brought clothes exclusively for the sales. Whoever has come here at Christmas and has seen a product that they liked and has waited for me to start the sales, are going to buy it now. Other shops, big shops, not to mention names, do have special items for sales", she tells us.

Many of us take the opportunity to take a look at clothes during the Christmas season, in fact shopkeepers say that sales have exceeded expectations during the winter holidays.  But, with our pockets in mind, others have been more patient and have waited prudently until after the Three Kings Day to buy those items "already in stock", and often the wait is worth it: "I have clothes here with up to 50% discounts, so you can take advantage of the prices to renew your wardrobe. It's always good to change", concludes Nuria.
