The Ministry for Health has announced today that it is imposing the compulsory use of face masks in health and social health centres throughout Spain as of tomorrow, Wednesday. Their use is mandatory in order to control the rise in respiratory viruses. In the end, the communities will have to comply with the obligation despite the majority rejection.
The use of face masks will be compulsory again from tomorrow. Specifically in hospitals, health and socio-health centres. The incidence of respiratory diseases is very high this winter throughout the country and the central government, overriding the powers of the communities, has decided to impose this general obligation.
Despite the controversy, as many communities have rejected the proposal, the Ministry of Health is imposing its use thanks to the Law for situations of special risk to public health, which regulates coordinated actions throughout the country. The Ministry for Health speaks of giving legal support to the communities that have already introduced this use in health centres, as they consider it "an effective and common sense measure, backed by scientific evidence and which is well received by the population". The Ministry affirms that "they will continue working to minimise the risks and standardise health protection".
The incidence of respiratory diseases in Andalusia, for the moment, is not alarming, and stands at 505 per 100,000 inhabitants, far from the national average of over 952.
