If you have a fireplace, be careful because the badly extinguished embers of these are behind the fires that have started in some of the rubbish containers in Mijas this Christmas. The Mijas Fire Brigade itself has made public one of these videos, in which you can see in detail their intervention to smother the flames which originated in a container in La Cala and which spread affecting a total of three containers and a nearby vehicle.
Over the Christmas period, there have been four container fires in which the fire brigade has had to intervene. Two of them took place in the area around La Cala, one in Calahonda and a fourth in Mijas Pueblo. The events occurred on December 27th and 28th and on January 4th and 7th. Although at first it was thought that the origin of these fires was vandalism, in the end it was discovered that they were the result of the embers of the fireplaces, which had not been completely extinguished and which reignited inside the container.
With the exception of one container for paper recycling, which will be replaced soon, the rest of the burnt containers have already been replaced by others.
In order to avoid such incidents, it is important to dispose of embers in accordance with the recommendations, which basically consist of ensuring that these are completely extinguished. One way to ensure that there is no risk of re-ignition is to deposit the embers in a metal container for at least 24 hours before placing them in the rubbish container.
