Soroptimist International raises funds at a charity dinner for its local delegation

  • The Eskina restaurant hosted the 42 diners who took part in the evening

The NGO is looking to increase the number of members in order to continue to carry out solidarity projects

The Soroptimist International Costa del Sol women's group organised a charity dinner on Wednesday 25th of October to raise funds for their local causes. The event took place at the Eskina restaurant in La Cala and included a musical performance to liven up the evening. 42 places were covered.

Soroptimist continues with its local projects to help women victims of gender violence, food bank, local women's sport and environmental sustainability. Therefore, it needs to continue organising events to be able to finance them. The group's president, Daphne Theunissen, explained that "we have agreed that if we do charity dinners here in Mijas, people also like the proceeds to stay here, in projects such as the food bank in Mijas and Fuengirola, for example. Helping those who don't have enough to eat is important. We also continue with other important projects such as helping victims of gender violence.

The dinner featured a very special menu, prepared for the occasion with local produce. The head chef, Mathew Lee, declared that "we feel the community very much, we participate with the families and we are going to offer a special menu, with the best that we offer in the restaurant to be able to share and be all together".

The participants were delighted to collaborate with the cause. This was the case of Sonia Molina, who knows the long history of Soroptimist. "This is a very important social aid NGO on the coast. Everything we can do to participate with these charity groups, which also support local businesses, these being very important, is welcome and we will collaborate as much as we can".

Soroptimist Costa del Sol is still looking for members to help with their cause, as the number is currently down to 21. All you need is a little time and interest to help the group in their humanitarian work. The NGO will also participate in the solidarity tables on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the end of the month in La Cala. More information on their website and social networks.
