Basic income employees are clearing & cleaning ditches at La Majadilla del Muerto

  • Works at La Majadilla on the 15th of September

Work has already been carried out on 5 kilometres in the area to prevent forest fires and remove accumulated rubbish

Basic Income continues with its clearing work in the rural areas of Mijas. Specifically, a large group is in La Majadilla del Muerto, after finishing the clearing of the brush in the area around the schools before the beginning of the academic year. According to Laura Moreno (PSOE), the councillor in charge of Mijas Servicios Complementarios, “we are now returning to all the ditches and all the rural areas, of which there are many in Mijas, with a new programme to clear the brush. We are talking about many rural areas, many urbanisations too, and I think the work that all the Renta Básica workers are doing is extremely important”. For her part, Marian Mustafa, manager of Mijas Complementary Services, said that, “currently, we have about 370 people in Basic Income, in the area of clearing we have 50, who do work in different areas of the municipality. We are now in La Majadilla, but also in the urbanisation around the racecourse, in La Ponderosa, and work has been done in the areas around the educational establishments in the summer period before the return to school”. The group works with specific machinery in these areas. They will be part of the programme until October, which means that they will soon finish their work in Renta Básica. They are already taking stock of their experience. This is the case of Morelvis Lira, one of the workers: “It has been a good experience for me, I am not from this country. I have a degree in Environmental Management, and I really liked the experience because I feel that I am doing something related to my profession. Besides, I am alone here with my two teenage children and, at least, I am supporting the household”. Moreno thanked all the employees for their work, especially during this harsh summer with very high temperatures. She also asked the general public to help: “it costs us nothing to take a bag and leave it in the car and then throw it in the bin, we find practically all the ditches full of rubbish, which we ourselves throw away, and which represents a high risk of fire with these heat waves that we are suffering”.
