Last Friday, September 1st, an exhibition on the situation of women in Afghanistan was inaugurated at the Cultural Centre of La Cala de Mijas. It is a campaign that Amnesty International has been carrying out since 2021, when the Taliban returned to power.
The exhibition consists of six posters with 16 Afghan women with different responsibilities. The aim of the exhibit is to make visible the harassment of Afghan women and girls and to demand their right to education and freedom. The coordinator of Amnesty International in Malaga, Toñi Alcaide, explained that "many have had to stop studying, they have to be accompanied by a man, they are forced to wear certain clothes, and if we don't denounce all this, the NGOs here would be even more isolated".
The inauguration was also attended by Juan José Romera and Emilio Lekuona, members of Amnesty International, who also organise this type of initiatives in schools so that students can learn about the very different and harsh situation in other countries. Romera, who is a librarian at IES Valle del Azahar, said that "within the library's programme we always include some kind of activity related to Amnesty International's activism". For his part, Lekuona, who is a lecturer at the University of Malaga, said that the work of the NGO can "also raise awareness among students of such harsh realities as those experienced by Afghan women".
The exhibition can be visited until September 25th. On its website, Amnesty International Spain has an online option to sign up to support its fight for these women.
