This working group helps foreign women by providing them with information and protection

The Viogenex group was created in 2016 as a working group established to help foreign women victims of gender violence in Mijas in response to the need and lack of information, as well as to coordinate, plan and prevent this scourge in the town.

Ahead of the summer season, the group met on Thursday 13th to try to stop gender violence in the face of the arrival of tourists. “Specifically,” said the councillor for Foreigners, Roy Pérez (PSOE), “at this meeting we discussed the coordination of actions during the summer. We know that during this season there is an increase in the number of people travelling to and from the municipality, so we are trying to set up as many campaigns as possible to help and collaborate with the victims”.

The councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), said “our intention is to be able to reach all those foreigners who are spending their summer holidays here and who may be suffering from some kind of gender violence, either within or outside the couple, so that they know where they can go to be attended to immediately”.

This group is made up of the aforementioned areas of Mijas Town Hall together with the Local Police, Guardia Civil and social agents such as Soroptimist International, Cruz Roja Mijas, Age Care and the Lions Club, among other groups.

Roy Pérez took the opportunity to “thank those associations that collaborate with the Viogenex group who help and collaborate in their own field and it is very important to recognise the help they provide, as often the administration does not have the same agility to take action”.

‘Ask for Angela’

The Department for Equality recalled the existence of the campaign launched in Mijas last year denominated ‘Ask for Angela’, which is aimed at businesses in the municipality to help potential victims of gender violence, mainly in nightlife environments.

Councillor Martínez wanted to “encourage all business owners in the municipality to approach us [Mijas Women’s Centre] and participate in this campaign, because I am sure that we can help many women with it”.
