The Provincial Court of Malaga has acquitted the only defendant in the great fire that broke out at the end of August 2012 and affected six municipalities on the Costa del Sol, including Mijas. The fire originated in the area of Barranco Blanco, in Coín, and at the time it was thought to have been caused accidentally by a gardener.
Now, eleven years later, the court understands that it is not possible to determine with certainty where the fire started, so the court does not consider it proven that this worker was the cause of the incident or even that he built a bonfire to burn the pruning remains.
It should be remembered that in this fire two people died, four were injured and more than 8 hectares of land burned in the municipalities of Coín, Mijas, Marbella, Alhaurín el Grande, Ojén and Monda. According to yesterday's edition of the newspaper 'El País', the Public Prosecutor's Office asked for seven and a half years in prison for the accused.
