The Plenary Session has given the final green light to the Municipal Ordinance for the Public Passenger Transport Service of the Mijas Town Hall, which includes as a novelty that a license will be granted for every 2,000 new inhabitants. As recalled by the councillor for Transport and Mobility, Nicolas Cruz (PSOE), the ordinance was given a period for allegations after its initial approval, finally taking into account two "due to criteria of opportunity". One has been estimated to determine the ratio; "that is, the number of cab licenses operating in the municipality", said the councillor. Specifically, "it has been considered that the proposal made by the Radio Taxi collective to set it at 0.5 licenses per thousand inhabitants is appropriate given the current situation of the sector". "That would mean that for every increase per 2,000 inhabitants there would be one more license, which would be added to the 118 that currently exist, since four new licenses have been recently awarded", explained Cruz to specify that these are nine-seater cabs that can provide services to groups and are adapted for people with reduced mobility.
The councillor said that last summer they found a very high demand for the service and also pointed out the "reality" of the municipality, where not only cabs operate but also VTC (Vehicle Transport with Driver) that, "somehow, absorb that demand". However, he clarified that the ordinance could be modified according to circumstances so that if, in summer, Mijas is "again faced with a huge demand we would have to re-evaluate the various considerations of the ordinance in order to be more effective in establishing a useful, guaranteed and quality service". Cruz said he was "happy" with this regulation because, although "there have been some differences" in terms of the ratio between the groups that make up the sector (Radio Taxi, Transfer and employees), it has been understood.
Trunk capacity
The ordinance has also incorporated the allegation of a private individual to set 330 liters as the minimum trunk capacity. "We think it is also an interesting addition because it can improve to some extent the service provided, especially to travellers arriving from the airport", said Ruiz.
The ordinance was approved with the votes in favour of all the municipal groups and councillors, except for the PP, which abstained, and was brought to the plenary session as a matter of urgency. "After the process of examination and control by the corresponding entities, it has been finalised and we believe it is appropriate not to wait another month until the next plenary session for its definitive approval", explained Cruz, who added that, in addition, it is being done in "the run-up to the sector's high season".
Non-attached councillor, Esperanza Jiménez, clarified that in the initial approval of the ordinance she abstained, but "once all the issues raised by Intervention had been rectified, as well as having accepted the allegations presented by the taxi sector", she was going to vote in favour.
