Foreigners’ Department visits the charity shop managed by Age Care

  • Councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (2nd left), visited the Age Care charity shop |

The establishment is the main source of income for the association

The Foreigners Department of the Mijas Town Hall paid a visit to the Age Care charity shop on Wednesday the 1st of March, represented by Arancha López (Cs), the councillor for Foreigners in the municipality.

The shop is the main source of fund-raising for this association which provides care for the foreign community. The people who visit the second hand shop located in El Zoco de Calahonda find clothes, shoes, decoration and even a small, perfectly catalogued library. The shop is run by a total of 15 volunteers and raises funds to help around 400 associates.

The president of the Age Cares Association, Tom Tarr, commented on their work: “We accompany them to morning coffees, to check-ups in clinics and hospitals, we act as translators, we offer care and anything else they need”.

For Larisa Blai, who as well as being a volunteer is also a coordinator, they all work to fulfil the objective with which the organisation was born 20 years ago, “our motto is ‘We work with our hearts’, that says enough, trying to help the elderly group, that’s why it’s called Age Care”. In this regard, Blai stated her appreciation for the support of the Mijas Town Hall and the promotion of their work.

During her visit, councillor López acknowledged that “Age Care can reach a part of the population that is not accessible to us from the public administration and, therefore, we support them as much as we can. In this regard, we are currently working together in the apemes group that helps elderly foreigners”.

The Age Care Association also offers help in areas that many of us probably take for granted. They support all those senior citizens in need, doing their shopping, covering the costs of carers and organising activities among the elderly foreigners’ community.

All of this is possible thanks to the funds raised from the sales in the shop in Calahonda, where we can always go in search of something we need or like and thus contribute in the simplest manner  imaginable towards the important work they do for so many people.
