  • A moment during the meeting on Thursday the 2nd |

On Thursday the 2nd, municipal representatives held a meeting with professionals from the University of Malaga to define the strategy for tourism until 2028

Adapting the tourist offer to the social, economic and labour context generated after the pandemic and offering proposals in accordance with the demands of the visitor are the objectives from which the drafting of the new Strategic Tourism Plan, that will emerge this year 2023. On Thursday the 2nd, representatives of the Mijas Town Hall and the technical and academic team from the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Malaga held a meeting in order to outline the lines on which the new plan will be developed, that will be in force until 2028.

The mayor Josele González (PSOE) pointed out that “having a segmented and diversified tourist offer and, above all, taking into account the new realities that the demographic and tourist data is going to provide, with more information in order to get our promotion right”.

After this first meeting, which also took stock of the First Strategic Tourism Plan, launched in 2018, it was announced that, after the summer, the Town Hall will initiate an “active listening plan” in order to receive proposals from political parties, entrepreneurs and social groups to analyse them and evaluate their inclusion in the new plan. For the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), “this is a fundamental instrument for a tourist municipality like Mijas, a roadmap where both political leaders and all citizens participate in the decision-making process to form this plan for the future”.

Sustainability, the development of a single destination management system linking the complete offer that makes Mijas a powerful attraction pole, the use of resources or the synergy with other destinations, are some of the aspects that were taken into account when drawing up the first tourism plan for Mijas and that will continue to be the basis for the second one. The new preferences of the post-pandemic tourist, oriented towards more sustainable tourism, in contact with the natural environment, will be one of the axes to be taken into account.

For the mayor, “Mijas has many segments to work on, I think we are one of the few municipalities in the province that has it all. From being the only Area of Artisan Interest in Malaga, with 14 kilometres of beach, an incredible mountain range for nature trails, a Historic-Artistic Site, gastronomy, festivals such as Calamijas and we have managed to do all of this in the last four years, with a pandemic in between. Therefore, I believe that the best is yet to come and we are going to move forward hand in hand with the University of Malaga”.

Mijas will be present at the ITB Berlin

From March 7th to 9th, Berlin will become the world epicentre of the tourism industry. Mijas returns to this international fair with a new proposal, which hopes to consolidate the Central European market, especially the German tourist. “Germany is the second largest source of tourists for Andalusia and the ITB is, along with Fitur and the WTM in London, another important date in the calendar to attract German tourists, with a medium-high purchasing power, who are looking for very specific places on the Costa del Sol and who we are trying to attract through a very segmented offer, which has to do with rural and sustainable tourism”, said the mayor Josele Gonzalez (PSOE).

“This promotion that we are taking to Berlin is attractive and fits perfectly with the tastes of German and Central European travellers, especially after the pandemic.  The German tourist is third on the podium of all the nationalities who choose Mijas as a holiday destination.
