Mijas recycled more than 43,000 tonnes of urban waste in 2022

  • These days the new brown bins are also being installed in the municipality.

The municipality transferred 10% more waste to the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex than the previous year, generating 1.34 kilos per inhabitant

Mijas generated a total of 43,862 tonnes of urban waste ('RU') in 2022, 10% more than in 2021, when 39,775 tonnes were collected. "This is a figure that demonstrates once again how our municipality is committed to recycling and the environment", assured the councillor for Street Cleaning, Laura Moreno (PSOE).

"The rate of waste generated per inhabitant per day was 1.34 kilos, compared to 1.26 kilos in 2021. A good example that the work we do from the council to encourage recycling pays off", explains the councillor, who recalls that "in addition to promoting it from the local government we have proceeded to the renewal of the entire fleet of containers including the installation, for the first time in the municipality, of the brown container, in which we must put all those remains that can be used to make compost and which differs from the traditional grey container in which other types of non-recyclable waste will go".

The month with the highest collection volume was August, with 4,484 tonnes, although it was in April when the increase was most pronounced, with 17% more than the same month in 2021 and 3,525 tonnes.

Light packaging
With regard to the collection of light packaging, the figures also show an 8% increase compared to 2021. Throughout 2022, 2,258 tonnes arrived at the Complex from Mijas, compared to 2,097 tonnes the previous year. August was the month with the highest volume, with 248 tonnes of packaging collected. But it was in March when the increase compared to the previous year was most notable, reaching 18%, according to figures published by the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex.
The same information also shows that the rate of light packaging per inhabitant per year in the town was 25 kilos, with the blue container, for paper and cardboard, receiving more than 1,685 tonnes in 2022 alone, 8% more than in 2021 when it reached 1,557. In total, the municipality generated an average of 19 kilos of paper and cardboard per year.

Campaigns
"This data shows that we are increasingly aware of the environment and the need to recycle and reuse", stresses Moreno, who highlights the value of the various "informative, educational and outreach campaigns that we have been promoting at all levels from the Town Hall for years, so that we lay the foundations for responsible and respectful waste management within our environment".
Finally, and in relation to the green igloo, intended for glass containers, in 2022 a total of 2,710 tonnes were collected, representing an increase of 20% over the previous year, and placing the rate of glass per inhabitant per year at 30 kilos.
