This week, the Mijas Town Hall thanked the citizens for their contributions to the project of the ‘Gran Parque de la Costa del Sol’, currently in the tendering process, especially those of the children, 80% of which have been incorporated. The councillor for Works and Infrastructures, José Carlos Martín (Cs), explained that these suggestions were received, in the case of adults, through the e-mail address elgranparque@mijas.es, set up by the local council for this purpose, as well as, in the case of children, from a competition of ideas that was promoted in schools in which almost 8,000 children and adolescents of the municipality were involved. Specifically, primary school students took part in the ‘Draw your park’ programme by means of creating drawings in which they asked for different features for the green zone.

They mainly asked for swings, slides and a lake. For their part, secondary school students requested, through essays, a skate park and a football pitch. In addition, the students as a whole also asked for a climbing wall, an auditorium, sports areas and a dog park. Likewise, some suggestions were rejected as unfeasible, such as a shark pool, a dragon or a castle with fire. “Since we proposed the initiative in 2016 we were clear that we wanted it to be a space for the residents of Mijas and to the taste of the people of Mijas and, therefore, we opened a process to promote citizen participation”, recalled the councillor to clarify that they wanted to “also involve the sectors of the population that will use this space the most such as children and adolescents”.

The councillor for Works and Infrastructures in Mijas stressed that their suggestions and all those that arrived by email “were subject to being developed technically”, according to the criteria of a multidisciplinary expert tribunal made up of experts from different fields, “such as biologists, botanists, university professors and engineers”. With a completion period of 18 months, the works will begin in the first semester of this year. Martín reported that, now that  the deadline for the submission of tenders by companies interested in developing this project is over, the evaluation phase has already begun, “which is where we will see exactly what the financial amount entailed in this contract will be and who will carry out the  works, which is something that we will all know in about a month and a half”.
